You’re not going to create a business site worth having without coding it, and without knowing what you’re doing (how do you keep people from breaking into your site, maybe using SQL injection, and stealing your entire database – including all your customers’ credit card information – which will make you financially liable for any and all losses all of them suffer).

You’ll have to spend either money (to hire someone to do it) or time (to learn to do it yourself), or you’ll be spending money defending your business in court (and losing) and you won’t be getting much business because the site is designed all wrong, and you’re on page 35,000 on a Google search for what you sell.

How many products/categories etc will you have on the site and how will they be managed?

Why the requirement for no database?

If you are looking to have more than just a couple of products on the site or want the ability to manage the online products without any coding etc you will almost certainly need a database.

MySQL databases are available with almost any hosting/server that also has PHP, and using a database is far simpler and faster than any alternative. For this reason, I don’t believe you will find an eCommerce solution without requiring a database, unless you are looking to just code in a few static product pages with paypal links.

I have a flash template that is geared more towards a portfolio-type site than an ecommerce store, but I am thinking of modifying it to suit my needs. However I am wondering what the pros/cons (speed, browser compatibility, etc) are to using an almost entirely flash template as an ecommerce solution? The site will have close to 800 products on it, approximately 1600 images, and is hosted on a linux server (if this helps).

Flash is not very search engine friendly if you are using it as a template for your entire site. Also, remember users tend to subconsciously ignore anything too flashy as it is reminiscent of advertising.

You can use dreamweaver as a design tool but then you have to take the html/css/js generated by dreamweaver and fit it into the ecommerce site properly. Some of it is easy stuff like adding to the css file already used by the app and uploading graphic components to the right directories. Some of it might require editing php files.

Please recommend a simple to install & configure eCommerce solution.?

I have a domain, hosting provider, and a book that I want to sell.. Just one book.
After I put up my site which will describe myself, background, and the book, I want to link to an order page.
Payment will be handled by PayPal and I want Customer Information to go into a DB obviously.. I had considered osCommerce but it seems a bit overkill.. All advice welcome.

Stay away from osCommerce like the plague – the entire design is tabled and the code is mashed in with the layout. (IDK about the Alpha release, but it’s been in Alpha for 2 years without an RC so it shouldn’t be used in production).

Ubercart is a great choice (especially if you have quickbooks). It’s easy to set up, has a large user base and is built off of (IMHO) the best CMS out there.

I don’t know much about virtuemart but Drupal is my CMS of choice over Joomla any day.

Magento is definitely the frontrunner in the open source ecommerce market, but like you said there is no option for digital products yet. This is in their roadmap though, so you may want to take a look to see when it will be available.

Also, one you might not have heard of: Substruct. It’s built on Ruby on Rails and seems to be very well designed. Being built on an MVC framework really helps with the separation of design and code. Therefore: templating is much easier.
