What’s the best way to drive traffic to a brand new ecommerce website?

Not just traffic, but sales.

You are talking about two different things — traffic and conversion. Getting lots of traffic is not a guarantee that you can get a lot of sales – you need to work hand in hand with these two aspects to make sure that the traffic you are bringing are converting.

The first thing to do is to research how people buy your products on the Web as this information can significantly affect where you put your marketing dollars. How do your target audience look for your product? Do they go to the search engines to research or do they read an industry publication before buying?

Not knowing your website or product, here are some general tips to get the traffic you need:

1. Optimize your site for natural search engine rankings. Search engines are free sources of traffic – you need to work hard to get to the top. Make sure your on-page factors are in place (metatags, titles with keywords, adequate keyword density ratio). With Google, you need to get other websites to link to you — but they have started to clamp down on what is perceived as “unnatural” links where in one month, a new website already gets 10,000 links because of an extremely aggressive link campaign (e.g. Sending emails requesting for links even from totally unrelated websites)

2. Pay-per-click campaigns. Use PPC campaigns such as Google Adwords, Yahoo, or the new MSN Adcenter. MSN Adcenter allows demographic targeting but they don’t have enough traffic as yet compared to Google and Yahoo (Google and Yahoo will also both go into demographic segmentation later on). But PPC can be VERY EXPENSIVE so watch your ROI carefully and don’t be carried away by the bidding wars. Define a strategy for your PPC campaign — e.g. Should you bid aggressively on your main keyword (e.g. “diamond”) to make sure you are on-top when a user starts their early shopping research OR should you bid slower on your main keyword but more aggressively on secondary keywords (e.g. “2 karat diamond earrings”. Define your strategy and measure your ROI. Use Google Analytics to help you get a clearer idea of the conversions of your PPC campaign.

3. Create the buzz for your business – do press releases (which are good for getting one way backlinks thereby increasing your search engine rankings), get your industry publications to do a story on you or at least a mention.

Get a copy of Internet Retailer magazine http://www.internetretailer.com/ . I get this for free, try if you qualify for a free subscription. Another resource I strongly suggest is Webmaster World (Ecommerce forum) as they can give you lots of help in improving your sales.

That is a very tricky question. Originally, we thought to use manufacturer supplied images, and for an article we wrote several chemical companies were contacted. Most companies were very nice and helpful, however Wynns chemical wanted final editorial approval before they would consider supplying images and even protested when we suggested we would take our own photos. All the photos of products we have on our site were taken by us or commissioned by us. Even with this approach, and contacting the companies some express a serious dislike.

I am really satisfied with it. The first three months are free and then you only pay $47 every three months after that. It’s worth it. But you do have to have patience.

Oh, and their customer service is great. They are hands-on and will answer your questions with personal emails.

What is the best way to produce ‘standard’ images (white background cut out products) for an ecommerce website

I try to figure out how I best produce the image for my childrenswear website. Most shops have got the clothes lying flat on bright white background. What is the best way to produce these images, i.e. which editing software should I use or is there an easier method ?

I will only add that getting a set of tripod lights and a portable studio can make the difference in how things look. The on-camera flash leaves harsh shadows and makes image trimming a lot harder.

What you need is

> your camera
> a tripod for your camera
> 2 slave flashes (these flash when the camera flashes)
> 2 umbrellas and tripods

these are often packaged together in a “portable studio kit” for around $300 at many photo shops. It all folds up when you’re not using it.

Take notes about which images look best so that subsequent photos can be made from your notes rather than trial and error.

Include information on the type of security you use (i.e. SSL), type of encryption (i.e. 128-bit) and how you handle their information (i.e. Personal info and credit card info). You may want to educate them on how they can identify secure pages via their web browser.

Consider have a graphical image created or designed for your website that represents security (i.e. Lock) and link that graphic to your security page.

Reassuring your visitors will go a long way and will help them overcome any fears of ordering online.

I’m not positive if it’s the best for your particular situation – there are so many, but I’ve been somewhat impressed with Magento:

It’s completely free, and they seem to keep it well updated, and it has plenty of features. If you’re JUST selling teeshirts, and there’s not a lot of variability to what you’re selling, then many of Magento’s features might be wasted on you. I’m not sure how much computer/web development experience you have, but Magento will have a learning curve. There’s a decent amount of documentation, though, and the setup process is pretty straight forward. Hardest parts will be setting up shipping/taxes/payment options, etc. And integrating with your current site.

It is a full-feature cart program, so it’s a little on the bloatware side, in my opinion, so you might also consider building your own (for simplicity and transparency) and/or also selling through seller channels like eBay, Amazon, etc. Of course Yahoo also does stores.

Server hosting fee’s – 5 bucks a month and upwards depending on the amount of traffic you anticipate.
Domain Fee- 15-25 bucks for the name
Marketing budget- Do you plan to use google adsense? Pay Per click with google (25 cents a click on average depending on how well you want to place on google searches.

PayPal- they deduct from your sales
Credit Card processing- at least 25 cents a transaction, depending on who you sign up with to process credit card payments.

On top of those common fee’s there are other things to consider:

We recommend you have a corporation set up to do business with.

A typical corporation costs 200-500 dollars to set up, depending on the type of corporation you prefer to start.

Also there may be some accounting know-how’s that are crucial for you to keep track of, especially if you plan on doing interstate commerce. This depends on the state you will be doing business in. If you don’t like the e-commerce rules in your state, you can file your corporation in another state and do business from there, but you dont have to physically be there, you just pay your business taxes to that state.

I plan to create an ecommerce web page through Photoshop, Imageready and GoLive. Is creating an ecommerce page any different from creating a regular webpage? So is it the same with creating a regular webpage in Photoshop except I have to add a shopping cart menu or something? Or the free shopping cart provided by the host will place it automatically on my site? How will it know where I want it located in my site? This really confuses me.

First off a partner in another state may work but in my experience in order to get a business started you need people that can communicate effectively and being in another state will slow communication. I would highly suggest getting a lawyer that knows business to draw up contracts and setup an LLC or S Corporation to save on taxes. You will need to have a way for people to communicate with you if their is a problem with the product. As far as free consultations you would probably have better luck talking to your chamber of commerce and go to a few meetings with other business people to ask for their opinion on what they would do.
